Why we recommend it
Open-loop stepper motors do not know where they are when the arm powers on, so every stepper axis needs a homing routine: drive slowly toward a switch, stop when it triggers, and call that position zero. These are the same mechanical endstops used on RAMPS-based 3D printers, which means they plug straight into CNC-shield and printer-controller endstop headers. They are also useful on servo arms as hard safety limits on a joint's travel. Mount them where the joint reaches them just before a mechanical stop, and home slowly so the switch is not overrun.
