Why we recommend it

Potentiometers do two jobs on a DIY arm. As an input, one knob per joint is the simplest possible controller — turn it and the matching servo follows — and it is how many first Arduino arms are driven. As a sensor, a pot coupled to a joint's axis gives an absolute angle reading on an analog pin, which is exactly the feedback mechanism inside a hobby servo. Wire the outer legs to 5V and ground and the centre leg to an analog input. A twenty-pack covers a knob controller for a 6-DOF arm plus feedback experiments.
