Most Arduino robotic arm code, wiring diagrams and shields — including CNC shields for stepper arms — are written for the UNO form factor, so an UNO-compatible board is the path of least resistance for a first build. The ATmega328P has enough PWM pins to drive four servos directly for a small arm, and for anything bigger you hand servo control to a PCA9685 over I2C on pins A4/A5 and keep the board free for inputs like potentiometers or a joystick. It programs in the standard Arduino IDE with the included USB cable. If you run out of pins or memory as the project grows, the Mega 2560 is the natural step up.
